Title: Help for Troubled Times
Date: November 17, 2020
Did you ever stop to think that we as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ are recipients of the most powerful yet intimate relationship known to man? If we treat this relationship with constant care and adoration, it supersedes any earthly connection we have. His love, tender care and mercies are limitless. They have no bounds. If God loves us that much, we can tap into every promise He gives us. The only restrictions we may encounter come from within ourselves, from our own fears and doubts. I don’t know about you, but tapping into His unlimited comfort, peace and joy is my lifeline these days!
We can encourage each other with this one guarantee, that the more difficult the season the more intimate He becomes. He becomes the certainty when there is absolutely nothing certain to be found with human eyes. Do you or someone you know need more peace, more joy, more hope? I think we can all answer yes to that question!
The lines have been drawn in our 21st century world. People seem to be either sinking or swimming. As believers we should definitely be swimming, yet right now it appears we are being asked to stay above water much longer than we ever expected, and it seems like we are swimming with sharks on every side. Although we love Christ, we can find our minds and hearts terribly discouraged. Satan wants nothing more than to stir up chaos, fear and doubt. If you should find yourself sinking into deep waters today, look up! The surface is not as far as it seems!
Many years ago I experienced an unnerving drowning feeling. Although it’s hard to explain, I can sum up this season of my life like this–it was as if I were underwater sinking deeper day by day. It was as if I could see the surface, and above it I could see people walking past, talking and laughing. Their lives appeared to be normal and life was going on as usual above the surface. However, I was stuck at the bottom and I just couldn’t seem to reach the top. If I could just get to the other side and finally be able to breathe again! Are you or anyone you know feeling this way? I am here to tell you and encourage you that when you feel like you’ve hit bottom you are not alone. And at that point there is only one way to go, and that is up!
It is in these times that God’s tender mercies are most keenly felt. It’s when you realize “not on my strength but His” is a real thing! The key is surrender (keep floating!). There are times we must fight with every bit of our being, and there are times that biblically teach us to lay it all down and stop trying to take it back! Pray, wait and watch how He will sweetly touch you, redeem and restore you. It’s not called giving up–it’s called looking up!
The Lord always sweetly speaks the loudest when we are feeling the lowest. One day in the particular season I found myself in that felt like a pool of despair, a doctor suggested I get out and go for a daily run. To be honest his simple antidote kind of insulted me. My thought at the time was, “That’s it? At this low point how can that help?” As the days passed, I relied on God’s strength to push me out the door. I will never forget that one special morning He showed me how intimate and loving He really is.
As I was running, I could not stop the tears from falling. I was begging for comfort and peace. As I approached a corner, I looked up and there were our beautiful majestic mountains that are so close by to where we live. God’s glorious creation was framed in bright blue clear skies. At that very moment the Holy Spirit deposited a song into my mind, with lyrics from the book of Psalms. As I sang these words, “I lift my eyes up to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of Heaven and earth,” it was as though God sealed a deal with me–the hills, the words to the song, the promise of help! Yet it’s now, years later, that I can say for certain He was my help. He indeed delivered me! And that same God promises all of you that very same help!
I pray His words to you today will come to life in beautiful living color!
I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper. The Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not smite you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will protect you from all evil. He will keep your soul. The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in, from this time forth and forever.
Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting.
Oh Lord, you have searched me and know me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up. You understand my thoughts from afar.
As God’s children, one of the most tender benefits we experience in life are those moments when our Father speaks to us. At those moments, we know that’s all we need for now, just the reassurance that He sees all we are going through. And the fact that the same big God who literally created the heavens and the earth by speaking it into existence uses His tender words to speak to us is a true gift, a miracle He freely gives.
The world is in dire need of a life raft. People are desperately seeking a solid anchor in their world. Discouraged souls need to know about our God, and the times He rescued us from despair. May we be quick to share with others what God’s rescues look like. We need to reassure them that the surface is not just a mirage, but rather God’s promise to us that never fails. Praise God His watchful eye is always upon us as He promises to keep us forever. May you go forth today knowing His face shines upon you! Amen!
Delighting in safe pasture,
